A sound bath involves lying back while instruments are played. Asking about format, volume and comfort helps you choose a session you will enjoy.
The name can be confusing: a sound bath does not involve water, towels or a tub. It usually means resting, sitting or lying down while instruments such as bowls, chimes or gongs are played around you. For people who already enjoy relaxing treatments like massage, it can be an appealing way to spend some quiet time.

Sound baths vary widely. Some last twenty minutes, others an hour or more. Some use a single bowl, while others layer several instruments. How much of the time is filled with sound and how much is left quiet differs too. Finding out what a particular session involves is far more useful than assuming that everything called a sound bath will feel alike.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers sound-based relaxation at the Lane Cove clinic. Before your first session with Christine, you might ask:
Mention tinnitus, sensitivity to sound, a history of migraines or anything that makes lying still uncomfortable. A bolster under the knees or a folded blanket can make a real difference.
A first session does not need to produce a dramatic emotional release to be worthwhile. Choosing an experience that feels manageable matters far more than chasing a particular reaction. Some people drift off, some notice their thoughts wandering, and some simply enjoy the rest.
Volume, distance from instruments, seating and the chance to take a break can all be adjusted. You are free to move, and no specific feeling is expected of you. Let Christine know what suits you, and keep in mind that a sound bath is a relaxation experience rather than a treatment for any health condition.
If you are booking massage on the same day, ask whether the sound session works better before or after it, depending on whether you want to arrive calm or leave slowly.
