Traditional names can blur the line between suction on intact skin and procedures that break it. Each needs its own explanation and consent.
Articles about traditional therapies sometimes list cupping, bloodletting and acupuncture in the same breath, as if they were variations on one theme. For anyone booking hands-on care, that blending can hide differences that really matter for safety and comfort.
Dry cupping places cups on the skin and creates suction, but the skin itself stays closed. Bloodletting deliberately breaks the skin, which brings different risks, different infection-control steps and a different aftercare conversation. Seeing both on the same list does not make them interchangeable, and agreeing to one is not agreeing to the other.

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, practises cupping at the Lane Cove clinic and can tell you which technique she is suggesting and why it fits the goal you have agreed on. Before anything invasive is even considered, mention any bleeding disorder, medicines that affect clotting such as blood thinners, and skin concerns including eczema, recent sunburn or cosmetic procedures.
Stories about historical use, or a clinic's general recommendations, can be interesting background. They should never stand in for a plain description of what will physically be done to you in the room.
Name one daily task or symptom that you would like to come back to when you next visit. When you return, include how comfortable the session felt and how your skin recovered. Visible marks are only one piece of information; whether to continue should come back to your original purpose, your response and the alternatives on offer.
If dry cupping is combined with massage in one appointment, ask how the two will be paced so that your skin and muscles are not overworked on the same day. You are always free to choose the simpler option, and to ask for time to think before agreeing to any procedure that breaks the skin.
