Small notes on a granule instruction sheet can make a real difference. Ask to go through them step by step, keep them with the label, and never swap in cooking terms from older herbal articles.
A bottled granule preparation comes with instructions written for that product and that prescription. Once you feel familiar with the general idea, the finer points can start to seem like fussy extras. Yet skipping a measuring step or relying on a routine you remember from elsewhere can quietly change what you are actually taking.
Older articles about Chinese herbs often describe cooking terms, such as adding certain ingredients first or late in the pot. Those notes belong to a different way of preparing herbs, and the clinic does not supply herbs in raw form for cooking. They should never replace the written directions supplied with your granules. A general article cannot provide measuring or preparation instructions for every formula, so your own sheet is the reference that counts.
Ask Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, to go through the instructions step by step, particularly when a product is new to you. Useful points to confirm include:
Keep the written directions with the original label, and clear up anything ambiguous before you begin. A friend's quicker routine or a note from an earlier prescription is not interchangeable with yours, however similar the bottles look.

Let Christine know when other medicines change, and mention your herbal product to your GP or pharmacist. Should a new symptom appear that might relate to the granules, contact her rather than tweaking the amount by trial and error.
Clients who enjoy calm, unhurried visits often say a few extra minutes on instructions makes the home routine feel far less daunting. Christine can help you mark the key lines on your sheet with a coloured tab during your next Lane Cove clinic visit.
