Getting Ready for a Cupping Session: Prep and Aftercare

7:17 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Cupping is easier to enjoy when preparation and aftercare are clear beforehand, especially if visible marks could affect your plans.

A cupping appointment feels much more relaxed when you already know how to prepare and what happens afterwards. Many people fit it in alongside massage or a skin treatment, so a few minutes of planning helps the whole visit run smoothly.

Information to share first

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, will ask at the Lane Cove clinic about sensitive skin, recent procedures such as waxing, peels or laser, and any reactions you have had to cupping or massage before. Mention a tendency to feel faint, too, as well as any medicines that make you bruise more easily, since both can change how the session is planned.

Think ahead about your week. Are you heading back to the gym, wearing a fitted or backless outfit, or attending a wedding or photo shoot soon? Visible circles can last a while, and knowing your plans allows the approach to be adjusted.

During the session

Speak up straight away if you notice uncomfortable pulling, a burning feeling, dizziness or light-headedness. Christine can lessen the suction, move a cup or stop. Lying comfortably, with a pillow where you need it, makes it easier to notice how you are feeling.

Before you leave

Ask which skin changes are expected, how long they usually take to fade for someone like you, and who to contact if an area becomes very painful, blistered or otherwise worrying. Simple, specific instructions are far more useful than a long list of rules gathered from the internet.

At your next visit, bring up one everyday activity or symptom you wanted help with, along with how comfortable you felt and how your skin settled. Marks are just one observation; continuing should depend on your goal, your response and the other options available.

Wearing loose, dark clothing to the appointment can make the trip home more comfortable. Skip a hot shower or sauna straight afterwards unless Christine says otherwise, and drink some water before you go.
