Self-care for low mood and anxious days

On anxious or low days, small acts of self-care can make the hours feel gentler. Here are some calming ideas, from time outdoors to restful touch, to use alongside professional support.

Small comforts on hard days

Some days start heavy. Worry hums in the background, or a flat, low mood makes even simple tasks feel like a climb. If that sounds familiar, you are far from alone: many people experience anxiety and low mood. At our Lane Cove clinic, where people come for acupuncture, massage and skin care, we often hear how much a little time set aside for comfort can mean.

First, reach out for support

Self-care is valuable, but it works best alongside proper care. If anxiety or low mood is affecting your daily life, please book in with your GP, who can assess what is happening and connect you with counselling, a psychologist or other support. Any decisions about medication belong in a conversation with your doctor. If you feel unsafe or in crisis, call 000 or reach out to a support line such as Lifeline or Beyond Blue.

Gentle self-care ideas

Get outside

Many people find that time in nature helps them feel calmer. Take your shoes off on the grass, sit under a big tree in a local park or walk along the water. Notice the colours, smells and sounds around you, and let yourself slow down.

Use sound to unwind

The steady rhythm of ocean waves is something many people find soothing. A recording of the sea or of rain can be a pleasant way to wind down in the evening and prepare for sleep.

Make room for restful touch

A relaxing massage or a quiet acupuncture session offers time to lie still, breathe and be cared for. Some people find this kind of rest helps them feel more at ease. It is a comfort practice, not a replacement for mental health care.

Be kind to your feelings

Rather than pushing difficult emotions away, try naming them gently: I feel sad, I feel worried. Writing them down or talking with someone you trust can help them feel acknowledged.

Remember that moods move

Life tends to move in waves. On a low tide it can be hard to imagine feeling lighter, but seasons do change. A slower period can also be a chance to rest, reflect and think about what you need.
