Seasonal Herbal Care: Why the Weather Alone Is Not a Reason

7:54 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Seasonal traditions make an interesting conversation starter, but they do not mean everyone needs the same product when the weather turns. Start from your own reason and the exact bottled preparation.

The appeal of a cool-weather ritual

As the days shorten, seasonal tonics appear in shops and social feeds as part of an autumn or winter self-care routine, a little like switching to a richer moisturiser. The idea is comforting, and seasonal traditions can be an interesting way to open a Chinese medicine conversation. Still, a change in the weather does not mean everyone should start the same product.

Starting with your reason

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, will first ask what has prompted your interest. A specific concern, such as feeling run down after a busy period, is a more useful starting point than a sense that it is simply the time of year. At the Lane Cove clinic, herbal medicine is dispensed as granules in bottles, so the discussion centres on what you need now and on the specific product under consideration, rather than on a seasonal paste recipe or a tonic you have read about.

Then cover the practical questions:

  • What does the preparation contain, and are any ingredients a concern for allergies?
  • How are the granules measured and taken, and how should the bottle be stored?
  • Does it suit my medical history, including diabetes, pregnancy or digestive problems?
  • Could it interact with prescription medicines or supplements I already use?

Illustrative: a white granule bottle rests on a soft white cloth, with a gong, striped blind and side table softly blurred behind it.

Details to keep together

Keep the written directions, use-by information and planned review date in one place with the bottle. Whenever your other medicines change, mention it to Christine. If something new appears and you are not sure whether the granules are responsible, call for advice before altering the amount.

Some clients like to pair relaxing, hands-on sessions with a small ritual at home when the weather cools. That is perfectly reasonable when the ritual has been chosen with care and you understand what it involves.

When the first chilly morning arrives, jot down what is prompting your interest and bring that note along, so the conversation begins with your real situation rather than the calendar.
