Cupping Beyond the Sports and Social Media Photos

7:33 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Cupping is older than any trending photo. Stationary and moving cupping are different procedures, so ask how each relates to your goal.

Round marks on athletes at international competitions and influencers on social media have made cupping instantly recognisable. Its history, however, reaches much further back than recent photographs, and the technique comes in several forms that are worth telling apart.

Different names, different procedures

Stationary cupping leaves cups in one place for a period of time. Moving cupping, sometimes called sliding cupping, glides cups over oiled skin and can feel closer to a firm massage stroke. Other variations exist too. Each name is a cue to ask what the method is for and how it feels, not a sign that one style always outranks the others.

Linking cupping to everyday life

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses cupping at the Lane Cove clinic and finds it helpful to hear what you would like to do with more ease. That might be turning your head while reversing the car, reaching up to a high shelf, sleeping without shifting every hour or getting back to a sport or class you enjoy.

Once a goal is clear, agree with Christine how it will be checked at your next visit. A simple everyday task is often a more meaningful measure than anything you can see on the skin.

History as background, not instruction

Learning about how cupping developed in different cultures can be fascinating, and it may add to your appreciation of the practice. Treatment decisions, though, still need to reflect your present health, your preferences and how you respond, not just what was done in the past.

Reviewing the session

After cupping, notice how comfortable the treatment felt and how your skin recovered over the following days. Marks are only one observation. Whether to continue should return to the purpose you set, your response and any other options that might suit you.

If you are mindful of visible marks for work or social plans, ask whether a moving technique with lighter suction, perhaps as part of a massage booking, would better suit your week. Telling Christine about upcoming events helps her plan around them.
