Both massage and acupuncture change when certain things are in the picture, and the awkward time to find out is once you are face down with a towel over you. A sentence at booking saves all of that.
Nearly nothing here means you cannot have a treatment. It means pressure, position, area or technique changes.
Very much treatable, and done differently. Side-lying with support rather than face down, specific areas avoided, and some techniques not used. Tell us how far along you are. For acupuncture, a number of points are avoided throughout.
Warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel, daily aspirin. Deep pressure is reduced and some techniques are dropped, because what feels like firm work on one person leaves a mark on another. For needling, finer needles and longer pressure afterwards.
We do not work with pressure on a limb with lymphoedema, and we do not needle a limb at risk after lymph nodes have been removed. If you have had breast surgery, tell us which side. This stays in your file permanently.
Pacemaker, defibrillator, nerve stimulator, pump. No electrical techniques near a cardiac device. Massage and manual needling are fine.
This matters more here than at a purely clinical practice. Active eczema or psoriasis in the area, recent sunburn, a rash you cannot explain, cold sores, an open wound, a fresh scar, or recent injectables or peels: all of them change what we can do and where. Recent cosmetic procedures in particular have waiting periods.
Tell us about anything you have had done in the last fortnight, even if it seems unrelated to what you have booked.
If feeling in your feet or hands is reduced, we work differently and check more. Pressure you cannot feel is pressure you cannot ask us to ease off.
All three change pressure and position rather than ruling anything out. Significant osteoporosis in particular means firm work is off the table.
None of this treats a medical condition and we will not suggest it does. If you have something new and unexplained — especially with weight loss, bleeding, chest pain, breathlessness or a neurological change — see your doctor before booking anything here.
